The Purpose of Life by Jeffrey Lang
I've read Jeffrey Lang's book, Even Angels Ask very long ago, in year 2000. I remembered.. I was so impressed by his writing and it has led me to read more and more books about Islam. It's one of the books that I think "intellect" and has "open my eyes".
And recently.. I came across this video. It's Jeffrey Lang's speech in youtube, talking about our purpose of life according to the Holy Qur'an. This video was published in youtube in February 2011, but I accidentally found it just now. From the very first I watched it, I'm so attached to it and I just couldn't believe that I have sit here, watching this video for one and a half hour, yet I didn't feel that it's such a very long speech (I didn't pay attention to its duration before and during I watch it, I just realized how long it is later). Even, I want to hear more and more of it, and learn more and more from his speech. But, at the end, just any other speech, it must end up because of the limitation of time. I must say that his insights into the Qur'an are remarkable.
I've read some of what he was talking about from his book years ago, but still the speech attracted me and it refreshes what I have had in mind. He was talking about a fundamental question that perhaps many people have been questioned about.. the purpose of our life.
Watching this also has encouraged me to read the English-translated Qur'an, so that I can follow exactly what he said and to come near to what he, or perhaps other English-speaking people, think when they are reading the Qur'an. The Qur'an I usually read is translated into Bahasa Indonesia. Its translation doesn't always has an exact same meaning with, or using an equivalent word with the translation in English. So sometimes, the "sense" we got is not the same when we reading the Qur'an's translation in different language.
I know that this blog is supposedly a style blog, but I just couldn't help to not share with you something that I thought is incredible.. something that has enlightened me. Anyway, I wrote/shared some things about Islam and Islamic teachings here in my first years of blogging.. so why not now I shared them again.
One thing for sure is that I'll always share things that I love, things that attract me, either it's fashion, my style, my taste, cute vintage items, photography, or other things.. And I think, until now, I want this blog remains to be a style blog..
Note: There's also a speech of Jeffrey Lang in Purdue University that speak on this topic too (divided into two videos). You can watch it here and here.
